MAD BAR Privacy Policy

Effective July 9, 2026

The short version: MAD BAR has no servers of its own. Your recipes, bar inventory, and event data stay on your device and, if you use iCloud, sync privately through your own Apple account — we never see it. The only data that ever leaves your device goes to Google's Gemini API, and only when you turn on optional AI features using your own free API key. We don't have accounts, ads, trackers, or analytics of any kind.

Who we are

MAD BAR is an independent, personal-use cocktail recipe and bar-inventory app. This policy covers the MAD BAR iOS app and the companion website used to host setup videos and download the starter recipe pack.

Information the app can access on your device

Camera — used only when you choose to scan a cocktail menu, scan bottles on your shelf, or take a photo for a recipe. Photos are not captured or used unless you actively trigger one of these features.
Photo Library — used only when you choose to attach a photo to a recipe or import a saved menu image.
Local network — MAD BAR can host a read-only copy of an event's cocktail menu directly from your phone over your own Wi-Fi or Personal Hotspot, so guests can view it in a browser. This page is served only on your local network — nothing is uploaded to the internet, and it stops as soon as you close the share sheet or leave the app.

Optional AI features (Google Gemini)

MAD BAR includes optional AI features — generating cocktail recipes, importing a recipe from a URL or video, and scanning bottles/menus with your camera. These features require you to add your own free API key from Google AI Studio; they are off until you do.

When you use an AI feature, the relevant text (ingredient names, a URL, your preferences) and, for photo/video-based features, the image or video is sent directly from your device to Google's Gemini API using your own key. This request does not pass through any server we operate — we don't have one. That data is subject to Google's Gemini API terms; on Google's free tier, inputs/outputs may be used to improve Google's models unless you've attached billing to your own Google AI Studio account. We recommend reading Google's terms if this matters to you.

iCloud sync

If you're signed into iCloud, your recipes, bar inventory, and events sync across your own devices using Apple's CloudKit, inside your own private iCloud database. We have no access to this data, no copy of it, and no way to view or recover it — it belongs entirely to your Apple account.

Guest feedback during events

If you use Party Mode, guest ratings and comments are stored locally on the host's device (and synced via the host's own iCloud, per above). Guests browsing the shared menu page in their browser never send or receive anything beyond viewing that page.

What we don't do

No user accounts, sign-up, or login
No advertising or ad networks
No analytics or tracking SDKs of any kind
We never see, collect, or store your recipes, inventory, photos, or API key — there is nowhere for them to go, since we don't operate a server

Your API key

Your Gemini API key is stored securely in your device's Keychain. It is never transmitted to us and is used only to authenticate your requests directly to Google.

Data control & deletion

Because everything lives on your device and/or your own iCloud account, you're always in control:

Delete individual recipes, bottles, or events any time from within the app.
Deleting the app removes all local data.
To remove synced data, delete it in-app (it will remove from iCloud too) or manage/delete the app's iCloud data from your device's Settings → your Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.

Website (setup videos & starter pack)

Our companion website hosts setup videos and a downloadable starter recipe pack. We don't collect personal information through the site beyond what's inherent to standard web hosting (e.g. server access logs). If any page embeds a third-party video player, that provider's own privacy policy governs data collected through their embed.

Children

MAD BAR is about cocktail recipes and requires confirming you're of legal drinking age in your country before using it. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the effective date above. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
